NYC-Bound Bus Overturns, Injures 23

Another tour bus bound for New York City crashed over the weekend. This time, thankfully, no one was killed. But, the accident marks the latest of several in the area and leaves officials wondering what more can be done to protect bus travelers.

According to the Associated Press, the bus was en route from Canada to NYC when it overturned on an exit ramp in Northern New Jersey. After turning over, it slid down an embankment and came to rest on its side.

Twenty-three people on board were injured in the crash, including the driver who suffered a cut in his arm. Eight of the injured passengers were admitted in critical condition.

It isn’t clear where the bus was going, but it was chartered by a church group and was said to be full to capacity.

The driver of the bus claimed he was cut off by another vehicle. No witnesses substantiate this claim, though the crash remains under investigation.

The accident happened at 7:30 a.m. and jostled many of the passengers considerably., Those who were not injured were understandably shaken up. They were put on another bus and continued on their trip.

The location of the accident is where several highways connect. It’s twists and turns of multiple exit ramps and roadways have earned it the nickname, “the spaghetti bowl.”

Whether you hop a bus to get to work or if you take one to get from state to state, you have a reasonable expectation that you will be safe. We often take it for granted that bus drivers will have undergone significant training and checks to ensure they are more than equipped to handle the hulking vehicle and all of the passengers on board. But, even the most experienced drivers can have accidents.

This is far from the first such bus accident. Several over the past few years have increased enforcement on charter and other bus companies, as officials have looked to crack down on drivers and the businesses that employ them. It is just fortunate that this one didn’t end more tragically.

A bus accident can cause serious injuries. Though buses are made to withstand pretty significant impact, when they roll over, the risk of serious injury is significantly increased.
